How pace, time and distance relate
Pace is the time taken per unit of distance. Dividing the total time by the distance gives the pace; multiplying the pace by the distance gives the time; dividing the time by the pace gives the distance.
Miles and kilometers are converted with exactly 1.609344 km per mile. Speed is the inverse of pace: 3,600 seconds divided by the seconds per kilometer or mile.

- Time: 50 × 60 = 3,000 seconds
- Pace: 3,000 ÷ 10 = 300 seconds = 5:00 per km
- Speed: 3,600 ÷ 300 = 12 km/h

Common questions
How do I convert a pace per mile to a pace per kilometer?
Divide the pace per mile by 1.609344 to get the pace per kilometer, or multiply the pace per kilometer by 1.609344 to get the pace per mile. For example, a pace of 8:03 per mile is about 5:00 per kilometer.
Is pace the same as speed?
They describe the same movement in opposite ways. Pace is time per distance, such as minutes per kilometer, while speed is distance per time, such as kilometers per hour. A pace of 5:00 per kilometer equals a speed of 12 km/h.
