How steps become kilometers

Distance is the number of steps times the length of one step. With the length in meters, the result in meters divided by 1,000 gives kilometers.

When you pick the height estimate, the step length is taken as roughly 0.413 times your height. It is a rule of thumb that fits many adults walking at a normal pace, so treat it as a starting point.

Distance (m) = Steps × Step length (m)
Kilometers = Distance (m) ÷ 1,000
Step length ≈ 0.413 × Height (walking estimate)
Steps per km = 1,000 ÷ Step length (m)

Worked example

10,000 steps with a step length of 75 cm:

  1. Step length: 75 cm = 0.75 m
  2. Distance: 10,000 × 0.75 = 7,500 m
  3. Kilometers: 7,500 ÷ 1,000 = 7.5

10,000 steps × 75 cm = 7,500 m = 7.5 km.

Assumptions and limits

  • The step length is assumed constant for the whole count.
  • The height estimate is for walking only.
  • Inputs are limited to 10,000,000 steps and a length or height up to 300 cm (120 in).
