How the three percentage questions work

A percent is a number out of 100. Finding X% of Y multiplies Y by X ÷ 100. Finding what percent X is of Y divides X by Y and multiplies by 100.

If X is Y% of an unknown whole, the whole is X divided by Y ÷ 100. Negative numbers are accepted. Asking what percent of 0 something is, or using 0% to find a whole, has no answer.

Formulas used

X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y
X is what % of Y = X ÷ Y × 100
X is Y% of what = X ÷ (Y ÷ 100)

Common questions

How do I turn a percentage into a decimal?

Divide it by 100, which moves the decimal point two places to the left. 25% becomes 0.25 and 7% becomes 0.07. Multiplying a number by that decimal gives the percentage of it.

What is the difference between a percentage and a percentage point?

A percentage compares a part to a whole, while a percentage point is the plain difference between two percentages. If a rate rises from 4% to 6%, it has risen by 2 percentage points, which is a 50% increase.
