How a salary becomes an hourly rate
An annual salary pays you for a certain number of hours in the year. Multiply the hours you work each week by the weeks you work and you get the yearly hours; dividing the salary by them gives the hourly rate.
The common shortcut of 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours is only a default here. If you work 37.5 hours or take unpaid weeks off, change the inputs and the rate updates, because fewer hours for the same salary means a higher rate per hour.
Formulas used
Yearly hours = Hours per week × Weeks per year
Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ Yearly hours
Weekly pay = Annual salary ÷ Weeks per year
Monthly pay = Annual salary ÷ 12 Worked example
An annual salary of 52,000 with 40 hours per week for 52 weeks:
- Yearly hours: 40 × 52 = 2,080
- Hourly rate: 52,000 ÷ 2,080 = 25.00
- Weekly pay: 52,000 ÷ 52 = 1,000.00
Hourly rate (gross): $25.00.
