How GPA is calculated

Each letter grade is worth grade points: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7 and F = 0. A+ also counts as 4.0.

Multiply each course’s points by its credits, add them up and divide by the total credits. For a cumulative GPA, your previous GPA times your previous credits is added to the new grade points before dividing by all credits.

Formulas used

GPA = Σ (Grade points × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative = (New points + Previous GPA × Previous credits) ÷ (New credits + Previous credits)

Worked example

Four courses: A (3 credits), B (4), A- (3) and B+ (3):

  1. Points: 4.0×3 + 3.0×4 + 3.7×3 + 3.3×3 = 12 + 12 + 11.1 + 9.9 = 45
  2. Credits: 3 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 13
  3. GPA: 45 ÷ 13 = 3.46

GPA = 3.46.

Assumptions and limits

  • The scale is the common 4.0 scale with plus and minus; weighted GPAs can be entered by using numbers up to 5 instead of letters.
  • Every course counts, including those with an F; pass/fail or withdrawn courses should be left out.
  • Up to 200 courses, with credits above 0 and up to 1,000 each.
