How milliliters and fluid ounces relate

A US fluid ounce is defined as 29.5735295625 mL and a UK imperial fluid ounce as 28.4130625 mL. The same number of milliliters therefore equals slightly more UK ounces than US ounces.

Most nutrition labels and recipes written in the United States use the US fluid ounce, while older British recipes and some Commonwealth sources use the imperial one. The converter shows the other system next to your result so you can compare.

Formulas used

US fl oz = mL ÷ 29.5735295625
UK fl oz = mL ÷ 28.4130625
mL = fl oz × 29.5735295625 (US) or × 28.4130625 (UK)

Worked example

250 mL as US fluid ounces:

  1. US fl oz: 250 ÷ 29.5735 = 8.454
  2. UK fl oz: 250 ÷ 28.4131 = 8.799

250 mL ≈ 8.454 fl oz (US).

Assumptions and limits

  • Results show up to three decimal places.
  • Values up to one billion are accepted.
  • For converting milliliters to grams, use the mL to grams converter with the density of the ingredient.

Common questions

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce on a scale?

No. A fluid ounce measures volume, while an ounce on a kitchen scale measures weight. One US fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 ounces, and other liquids weigh more or less, so the two units cannot be swapped without knowing the density of the ingredient.

How many milliliters are in a cup?

A US cup holds 8 US fluid ounces, which is about 236.6 mL, while a metric cup is 250 mL. The ounces to cups converter does this conversion directly and also covers weight ounces of common ingredients.
